On the morning of April 28, 2025, the Iberian Peninsula was surprised by a widespread blackout that left Portugal, Spain and parts of southern France without electricity. The incident, which began around 11:30 am, impacted millions of people, disrupting critical services such as hospitals, transport, airports and telecommunications. Although the exact causes are under investigation, with signs of a failure in the European electrical interconnection, the response was swift, with power being gradually restored throughout the day.
In Portugal, Redes Elétricas Nacionais (REN) and E-Redes mobilized extraordinary efforts to restore supply, prioritizing essential infrastructure such as health units and water supply systems. As of midnight on Tuesday, around 6.2 million consumers already had electricity, with 80% of the Portuguese population once again supplied.
