New 3D filament produced from wastes from makers

On June 5, World Environment Day, Tucab, through Fil3D brand, launches an ambitious “Fil2ndlife” concept applied to 3D printing, demonstrating that plastics can and are also on the side of the solution for environmental sustainability . This filament will be produced from plastic waste from 3D printing, which will be recycled and reused in this new filament, giving them a second life.

TUCAB, is a company that focuses on the production of plastic products, and is aware of the importance of reintroducing recovered material processes in its processes, thus minimizing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

As the 3D printing community is aware, in this type of printing, various types of waste are produced, and currently there is no place that allows their separation and reintroduction, inevitably culminating in their sending to the common garbage that will later be sent. to landfill.

In view of this situation, TUCAB, through its Filament for 3D Printing brand, Fil3D, developed an innovation and development project with the objective of creating a sustainable practice in 3D printing, which aims to reuse the plastic waste caused, resulting from unsuccessful printing … etc

Our process depends on the Portuguese Makers, who will deposit the 3D waste in the Boxes that we are delivering to our distributors throughout Portugal.

Due to the different types of materials used in 3D printing, the pieces, when deposited in the box, must be placed in the corresponding opening and when received at TUCAB they have to be analyzed in order to ensure that there is no contamination of materials. For example, we cannot take the risk that PETG has been placed at the opening of PLA and vice versa.

The identification and confirmation of the origin of the parts is our first step, which will be carried out using laboratory equipment, which allows us to identify the material and ensure its proper separation.

After the correct identification of the materials, the parts will be subjected to a mechanical grinding process, in which it may be necessary to “break” some parts initially due to their dimensions and later, they will be introduced in the mill to guarantee obtaining the material in a suitable size for reintroduction into the process.

The ground obtained from the pieces is subsequently added to the granulated material that is derived from non-compliant productions or from the start of production, this guaranteeing the complete consumption of the waste generated both at TUCAB and by the users of 3D filaments.

To the previous Matters, Virgin Raw Material is added in the percentage that we think is most appropriate, after countless tests and rehearsals.

After obtaining the mixture, the material is subjected to exactly the same process as the virgin material, being placed in the oven for a certain period of time to eliminate moisture and later processed in the extruder to obtain 3D filament.

FIL2ndlife arises from the need to guarantee a sustainable and environmentally friendly 3D printing world, because it is the responsibility of all of us to care for the planet.

With this Fil3D Brand Innovation, Tucab intends to extend it to the other brands, of profiles, tubes and seals, and to take a proactive role in the search for new paths and in the creation of new sustainability networks, creating solutions that enhance responsibility and environmental sustainability. Proving that the solution for plastics is on the side of consumers, but also of plastic transformers.
